When asked why I take more pictures of children I actually had to think about it for a little while. Then I remembered something that my father told me many years ago. As a photographer, he said that photographing children was so much easier, since children will usually show the most sincere and authentic expressions. They are who they are. You don't have to take as many pictures of them before you get a natural shot.
It's as we grow older that we learn how to obscure our emotions and only reveal what we wish for others to see on the outside. Like that fake smile when we are really feeling down, or a melodramatic sigh when we want somebody's attention, or even just that artificial enthusiasm when we receive a pair of socks for Christmas. Unfortunately, if it's not sincere, then people will feel it or eventually perceive it anyway, and it's often not so easy to hide.
Wouldn't it be nice if we could all feel
comfortable in just being ourselves, all of the time? And wouldn't it be nice if
we really knew what the other person was feeling just by a smile on their face?
I guess it's unfortunate that we don't live in a world that is that easy, and we
often have to try to look deeper inside a person that might be afraid to reach
out for help, or to come straight out and ask for that long-needed hug.
I used to think that was what television and theater was for. So we could watch
other people pretend and over dramatize feelings and personalities and emotions.
But it is all too apparent that the world around us is not so different, and in
actuality, we are all shy and hide behind a mask from time to time.
So, no matter how they may appear on the
outside, just reach out and give somebody a hug today.
You might actually find that you may have needed it more yourself.
