COTOPAXI, COLORADO 8-25-01

While I was still in Salida, I went to CellularOne to see if my phone needed to be reprogrammed to the new Kansas area code. Glynis wasn't sure, so after several phone calls she found out that it did need to be changed.
While she had CellularOne on the phone, she told them about my walk and asked what they could donate. CellularOne gave me 500 free minutes, good until they're all used up. Way to go Glynis!
On Friday I walked 12 miles to Howard. Glynis & Terry hauled my cart to the RV/Campground where I was going to stay. The campground let me stay for free. So far on this trip I've never had to pay to stay at a campground.
When they dropped my cart off, she left a care package with it. It had candy, dried fruit, gatorade, granola bars and a new pair of wool socks.
When I got to the campground, I asked where a restaurant was and they said about a mile back from where I came. Now I do not like the idea of backtracking a mile just to get something to eat, and I was sort of grumpy about that. But backtrack I did, grumbling the whole way.
I walked into the restaurant and immediately the waitress exclaimed "I know you! I read your story in the paper and I saw you walking this morning!" She then served up a great meal and I got to eat there for free. Funny the walk back didn't seem nearly as far.
On Saturday morning Terry & Glynis met me at camp at 7:30 and hauled my cart to the KOA campground in Cotopaxi (free again.) They were going that direction anyhow, so they hauled my cart.
The walk from Salida to Howard and on to Cotopaxi is really a very scenic area. It goes right through Bighorn Sheep Canyon and runs right along the Arkansas River. I've thoroughly enjoyed this part of Colorado and would often find myself taking a break down by the river.
The weather is cool and the scenery spectacular.
On sunday I have about 24 miles to cover, and I'm going to try and do it in one stretch. This KOA camp is hauling my cart to another KOA
at Royal Gorge. I plan on staying there sun & mon night (yep, free again.) I hope I can see the Royal Gorge while I'm there.
Y'all take care and have a great day! KB
